In the Southern regions of Anim, where the air grows cold, and the sky grows dark for months at a time, one particular group of sea-faring birdfolk has built their homes into the land of ice and snow. Solitaire is an aptly named country, for much of the land is silent and untouched. The trade roads grow dormant for much of the year, and outside of the major settlements, the land remains barren. The penguinoflk that call Solitaire home don't mind, for they have always preferred the oceans. They swim and they sail with little care for cold or wet, and penguinfolk-run vessels are considered to be among the safest ships the world over. Their ships are an odd bunch, though, for penguinfolk hold to the belief that naming a thing grants it a soul, and so their ships are like family members to them. To let a ship die is a tragedy, and penguinfolk will repair and repair and repair until they can't anymore. In fact, most ships don't retire until their captain does, and when they do, the ship is oft repurposed into the captain's new land-locked home; a family member in and of itself, despite it's inanimate nature.
Solitaire is, in many ways, a land of salvage. The penguinfolk are a hardy and resourceful group, and they despise letting anything go to waste. When things break, they are either repaired, or when repair is no longer possible, they become scrap for building or repairing other things. As such, their homes and cities are cluttered, and somewhat ramshackle in appearance. This visual disarray means nothing about their quality of life, however. Solitaire's buildings are almost impressively sound in structure and weatherproofing, and the engineers and maintenance workers are constantly on the lookout for signs of damage or decay. In recent times, penguinfolk have even grown notoriety as both rescuers and salvagers of other ships. Some companies have even formed that will salvage all they can of a sunk ship, for a hefty price. But may dread pool in your soul if they find out you kept your ship in ill repair, for as peaceful and friendly as they are, they do not forgive those who heap harm and abuse upon their soul-sibs.
